Wild Bill Storms L.A. ! — Part 2
After two days of not quite indiscriminate drinking in Long Beach over Memorial Day weekend, we were prepared for an assault of the infamous Goat Hill Tavern in Costa Mesa. With 144 taps serving 137 different beers (they double up on Bud, Bud Light, etc.) it was the perfect location for Sunday lunch. We started out with a bottomless bag of peanuts, throwing the shells on the floor for the next couple of hours as we downed mug after mug. I began with Stone Oaked Arrogant Bastard. Next up was Coronado Idiot IPA. Feeling hopped out for the day, I next opted for Kronenbourg 1664. My penultimate selection was Hangar 24 Orange Wheat, followed by Stone Spröcketbier.
We moved on to Pasty Kitchen in Los Alamitos. I know what you’re thinking – pasties go well with g-strings. Sorry to disappoint, but these pasties are meat pies. Bruce and I each had a large, stuffed with beef, potatoes, carrots and onions. We split sides of coleslaw and macaroni salad, enjoying the sunny day at a table outside. It was back to base camp for the rest of the day, to snooze, watch TV and rehydrate. We washed down our dinner pizza with the Lindeman’s Cassis Lambic we bought the previous day.
After three days of hanging around Long Beach and points south and east, we headed north and west up the PCH. I felt like a detox day, so I drained a Diet Mountain Dew Big Gulp during our journey. We must have passed 15 Del Tacos and 10 El Pollo Locos on our drive through Redondo Beach, Santa Monica and Malibu. Bruce’s off-key rendition of “Beach Blanket Bingo” was entertaining, but only to a point -- Frankie Avalon he ain’t! We headed inland up the scenic Malibu Canyon, then circled back on the Ventura Highway. Did we stop to see Hollywood? F*@k Hollywood!
Enough frivolity -- it was 4:00 p.m. and we hadn’t had a beer yet. What better place than Taco Surf in Belmont Shore? We split two pitchers of Dos Equis Amber and two baskets of chips with salsa. I downed four tacos -- one carne asada, one shredded beef, one pork and one chicken. Repeating our usual pattern, we returned to base camp to snooze and guzzle water. My project that evening was wrapping up four bomber bottles with bubble wrap for the next days’ flight home. The chosen beers were Stone Matt’s Burning Rosids Cherrywood-Smoked Saison, Nikasi Tricerahops Double IPA, Backstreet Brewery Ridin’ Dirty Rye IPA and Stone Rick and Robbie’s Spröcketbier Black Rye Kölsch Style.
Tuesday morning, the Brucemeister dropped me off at LAX for my flight back to San Antonio. Reflecting back, it was a great trip. I had a blast! I ate too much and drank too much, but even us old bald guys gotta let our hair down once in a while, so to speak. LA may not be the absolute Mecca for a craft beer connoisseur, but there are plenty of good breweries, alehouses and beer joints within easy driving distance. As Ahnold would say, “I’ll be bock!”

Wild Bill Storms L.A.! -- Part 1
Ah, California … land of milk and honey, fruits and nuts, Hollywood and Ahnold. Your humble and obedient narrator spent Memorial Day weekend 2014 in the Long Beach area, hosted by his surfin’ soccer star buddy the Brucemeister. The goal was to see the sights, drink the beer, eat the food and absorb the culture.
Arriving about noon on Friday at LAX, I met Bruce curbside. A quick dash down the 405 freeway got us to base camp (the maids quarters within Art and Margie’s family compound), a mere two blocks from the north Pacific. It was cloudy and in the 60’s, a beautiful day. Say hello to Cali the cat, dump off the bags and commence the assault!
First up was Taco Surf in Belmont Shore. Happy Hour began at 2:00 p.m. but our waiter Pepe could see we meant business, so he let us start at 1:51. The big special is street tacos – your choice of meat on 4-inch soft corn tortillas for a buck fifty each. The draft beer was dirt cheap, too. I washed down two pastor and two Baja fish tacos with a pint of Dos Equis Special Lager and two pints of Dos Equis Amber. After an hour and a half, a couple baskets of chips and salsa and lots of trash talkin’ it was time to move on.
Next stop was Mother’s in Sunset Beach. Bruce hadn’t been there since 1980 or so, when he was just old enough to legally drink. Apparently, it hasn’t changed a bit in the interim, except of course for the beer selection. This little shack had a seating capacity of about 30 – 15 or so at the U-shaped bar and the rest in four or five tables. You’ve been in a place like this, with donated dollar bills stapled to the rafters. Also up there were more brassieres than in Paul Holder’s front tree after a pool party! But I digress … Our barmaid was Alison, 6’ 2” of no-nonsense. We called her “Helga” and she called us both “Shorty”. You know the type – She says “COME HERE, BOY!” and you say “Yes, ma’am”. Over the course of an hour or two, we had a big bowl of peanuts, throwing the shells on the floor. I drained a 32-ounce mason jar of Stone IPA and had a sample of Karl Strauss Windansea Wheat, a damn good hefe.
With five pints already in the tank, the afternoon continued at Coach’s in Seal Beach. I washed down my delicious 3-piece cod fish and chips dinner with a pint of Stone IPA. The local sitting next to us, Erik, had been an ensign in the Navy. He was working on earning his wings at CCNAS when they terminated his training as Viet Nam was winding down.
Pint seven, a schooner of Carlsberg, was consumed at Joe Jost’s back in Long Beach. We watched a couple play pool, badly. I should talk – I’m a triple bogey golfer and I suck at billiards, but it is entertaining to watch people who are even worse than you. We got an unwelcome show every time the dude bent over to shoot. As Bruce put it “That guy’s got the highest plumber’s crack I’ve ever seen – it goes half way up his back!” We stumbled home to pass out, drink a lot of water and watch TV.
Amazingly, Saturday began WITHOUT a hangover. It was another cloudy day in the 60’s. We began with brunch at Roscoe’s Chicken and Biscuits – Snoop Dog, er, Snoop Lion’s place. I had the Stubby’s platter, a fried chicken breast and wing with grits, two eggs and a biscuit. Needing a jolt of caffeine, I opted for iced tea. Down the road, we hit Total Wine – think Liquid Town or Spec’s on steroids. I was in awe of the beer selection. I just wandered up and down the aisles for 20 minutes or so with my mouth open. Finally, Bruce resorted to threats and promises of free money and strippers out in the parking lot. I grabbed a big bottle of Lindeman’s Cassis Lambic for later consumption and four mystery bomber bottles to bring home in my checked bag.
Next stop was Beach City Brewery in Huntington Beach, a microbrewery with a tasting room that serves pints and 5-ounce samples seven days a week. After meeting the owners and brewmeister, we got a tour. The large walk-in cooler (more of a cool room) was full of various size kegs, all with the baby blue and silver Beach City logo. I asked the dude if they did any bottling, and he said they were having some contractors coming in soon with a mobile bottling line. Contract beer bottling at your location? I guess it makes sense if you have enough small local breweries. I then enjoyed five of the samples. First up was the Beach Cruiser Berliner Weisse, a great session beer at 2.8% ABV. Beer two was the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway, dummy!) Pale Ale at 5.5% ABV. The Hang Five IPA took no prisoners at 7.0% ABV, nor did the Rye’T IPA at 8.4%. Dessert was the Sweet Crude Stout at 5.6% ABV.
What if you get the munchies while enjoying a couple of pints at a picnic table in the tasting area? This place has a rotating schedule of food trucks (listed on a chalkboard “menu”) that camp out in the parking lot. That day it was “The Kraken”, with “Viking Sausage” and “Porko Rico BBQ” coming soon.
As the afternnon wore on, we drove down the scenic PCH through Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. There were Ferraris to the left, Maseratis to the right, Bentlys in front and Lamborghinis coming at you. “Do you want to go all the way to San Diego?” Bruce asked. “Hell, no!” I responded “that’s Paul Holder’s ‘hood!” We circled back to Long Beach, grabbing a couple of Jacked Up Crunchtadas at Del Taco for a snack before passing out.
That night we met some folks for a birthday dinner at Azteca, an Elvis-themed Mexican restaurant (say what?) on Old Main in Garden Grove. The pitchers of margaritas were tempting, but it was detox time for this old fool.
Stay tuned for Part 2, the thrilling conclusion to Wild Bill’s Memorial weekend adventure, where the identity of the mystery bomber bottles will be revealed!

May 2014 Minutes!
The March B.A.S.H. meeting was held on Sunday the 18th at the home of John and Nikki Daniels in Rockport. The club’s President and Vice President were missing, so we drafted Paul Holder to run the meeting. Treasurer Carroll Pate reported another healthy treasury balance.
The remainder of the meeting was brief. Since the new fiscal year begins in July, we need to elect officers during the June meeting. If you’re interested in serving as President or Vice President, show up and toss your hat in the ring (even you, Travis). Paul announced that he will take orders for B.A.S.H. shirts during the July meeting. Tom Freund knows a guy with a large cylinder and regulator containing CO2/nitrogen mix. He’d like $100 for it, but would accept about any offer. Tom has the phone number.
Thinking WAY ahead to December, Carroll announced that he and Judy will NOT be serving pork loin, replacing it with carnitas, charro beans, guacamole and, possibly, rice.
There was no competition or demonstration brew this month. As we feasted on pasta, we enjoyed new homebrews by Wild Bill Lehfeld (roggenbier/weizenbock), Claudio Montiel (Irish red ale/sorghum ale) and Carroll ("Ball and Chain" wheat kölsch). Jason Merry brought a mixed pack of Firestone Walker beers, including the Pale 31 Ale, Double Barrel Pale and IPA. As usual, old homebrew inventory reductions were plentiful.
Random overheard utterances included …
- "The more insurance you have, the sicker you are."
- "I don’t have any stones!"
- I’d like that in hogsheads!"
- "With my phone, you can’t butt-dial anybody."
- "Is it a floater?"

BIG BREW 2014 MINUTES!!!
There were no gang smackdowns or slashing switchblades at Big Brew 2014, just a minor butane explosion and a major party foul. This years’ event was held at B&J’s Pizza on Staples at Timbergate, hosted by the Bearded Brewer, Kyle Hotz. By 10:30 a.m. the B.A.S.H. canopy was erected and the Fuzzy’s breakfast tacos were on order.
Outside, Paul Holder and Aggie Bill Hughen began their demonstration brew of an all-grain American pale ale using Bill’s mobile brewing system. Inside, Kyle tapped the 2014 version of B&J’s Vic’s Poteet Strawberry Ale, along with the Big Shell Amber Ale. Travis Clapp helped Kyle brew a 15-gallon batch of Cubano ale on B&J’s system. Eventually, Chris Edwards and Zach Romo began a demonstration brew of an extract Russian Imperial Stout, using Tom Freund’s propane-fired system. Rookie Chris was to experience a steep learning curve on the joys of open-flame brewing …
NEWSFLASH !!!!!!! John Milan is STILL NOT DEAD !!!!! The Mysterious Medical Miracle (otherwise known as Beef Jerky Man) showed up in the flesh, still fat, sassy and mean as a snake. As high noon approached, Wild Bill Lehfeld was the only B.A.S.H. officer present. By the powers invested in himself by himself, he commanded everyone to raise their glass on high in the global synchronized toast to homebrewing. It occurred one minute late, to allow a late-arriving Rocky Freund to run inside and grab a beer. “Time waits for no man, but it waits for Rocky”! Check out Chris Swanson’s Big Brew 2014 Part I video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBMHvQxKBVM
As the demonstration brews progressed and attracted hordes of curious onlookers, Travis was asked to explain the philosophy behind the naming of B&J’s Man Pigeon Köllsch. Said Travis “Every man is born free … as free as a bird. But what kind of bird are you? If you haven’t achieved your desired station in life you’re just a man pigeon, annoying as hell and pooping everywhere”! Even by Travis standards that’s utter nonsense. The beer, however, is delicious.
Back outside, Chris Swanson was donating empty bottles to Claudio Montiel and Paul Kalaghan and wife “Noreen with a D” were regaling all with tales of owning a homebrew supply shop in the wild and wooly 90’s. Suddenly, the calm was shattered by a loud BOOM. It seems that Chris Edwards had left a butane igniter on top of Tom’s propane burner. During the ensuing chaos, the brew pot made like Old Faithful and erupted into a geyser of Imperial stout. The EPA and TCEQ were notified, the Coast Guard deployed containment booms, drones were launched overhead and the cleanup commenced. A contest then began to name the ill-fated brew. Some suggestions were “The Big Spill”, “Oil Slick Stout” and “La Brea Tar Pits”. It’s documented for all eternity in Chris Swanson’s Big Brew 2014 Part II video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHGVZCR_CRE
Meanwhile, the usual beer-fuelled quotations spewed forth, such as “The hot tub is broken, we had to let the lobsters go”, “He was a hoss, he was an ox, like myself”, “It’s getting mighty viscous” followed by “That’s what she said”.
By 2:30 p.m. Paul and Aggie Bill were all done. By 3:00, it was time to go home and take a big-@ssed nap before reconvening at The Man Shack for Inventory Reduction. One final detail – taking down the B.A.S.H. canopy. While this structure gamely battled the wind all day, an unfortunate directional shift during disassembly led to a nearly disastrous double back flip. A quick reacting crew saved the day. We survived another Big Brew !
Upcoming B.A.S.H. events:
- 18-May-14: B.A.S.H. meeting (3rd Sunday, John Daniels)
- 8-June-14: B.A.S.H. meeting (Danna Sharpe, German wheat/rye beer competition, BJCP 15A-D)

See you at The Daniels’!

April 2014 BASH Minutes
President Adam called the meeting to order when we realized that we couldn’t eat until we got the meeting over. Treasurer until death Carroll reported that he had forgotten the bank statement (again) but that we had a sufficiency in the treasury and he would miss the Big Brew due to a quick trip to the Bahamas. I’m sure those two facts are completely unrelated. Travis announced that he had directed his lawyer to take care of his dues and is now current (for the next 2 months).
Paul reminded everyone that the Big Brew would be held at B&J’s, Staples location, on Saturday, May 3. We will begin at 11 AM and go until we have completed the 3 AHA recipes. This is another opportunity for the public to see how to homebrew so invite your friends and neighbors. Knives will not be allowed due to previous problems. Aggie Bill and Tall Paul will do an extract version of an American Pale Ale, Young Chris will brew an Imperial Stout from extract and Motorcycle Mike and First Chris will attempt an all grain version of a Schwartzbier. Remember that we will toast home brewing clubs around the world at noon, Central in unison with all other Big Brews.
In other old/new business, we cheered the final licensing of Lazy Beach Brewery, owned and operated by members, Cory and Jess, and Drew. We learned of the opening of another South Texas brewery in Goliad and then held this month’s competition, American IPA and Imperial IPA. As usual, brewery owner Cory ran the competition featuring commercial examples, 8 member-brewed IPA’s and 2 IIPA’s. The judges all suffered tongue fatigue, which prevented them from fully enjoying Mark’s brats, but finally announced the results. In first place was Kevin with an IPA, second was host Mark with a barley wine. No he actually brewed an IIPA. Young Chris took third place.
We had several newbies attend most of who contributed to Carroll. Zach, another Paul, Craig, Sean, Josh (Jackie’s brother), Josh (not Jackie’s brother) and Brent. Welcome and hope to see you all at the Big Brew to pick up and give pointers.
I was lazy and didn’t categorize all the new and commercial beers at the meeting; so, if you brought it you can bring it again next time and we will recognize it then. And the next meeting will be to the north, in Rockport, at the home of Nikki and John Daniels. As always, bring a chair, glass, side dish and beer.
I encourage you to car pool so we conserve fuel for our burners. Prosit!

March 2014 Minutes!
The March B.A.S.H. meeting was held on Sunday the 9th at Youga Yoga Studio in downtown Corpus Christi, hosted by Lindy Burns. The club’s President and Vice President were missing, so we drafted Paul Holder to run the meeting. Paul began by welcoming new member Walt Crawford. Treasurer Carroll Pate reported that the club balance was back up to healthy levels after an influx of dues and a dearth of expenses.
We signed a sympathy card for Theresa Thomas, in memory of Allston Crawford. Member John Milan is recovering well from his recent surgery. That’s right, he’s STILL NOT DEAD. The Grim Reaper came a’ callin’ and John sent that sickle-carrying wraith packing (but not before selling him a couple of pounds of beef jerky).
The Big Brew, a celebration of National Homebrew Day is coming up on Saturday, May 3 at 11:00 a.m. This outdoor brewing demonstration is open to the public. Three recipes have been provided by the American Homebrew Association this year – a pale ale, a schwarzbier and an imperial stout. The club will provide the ingredients, and the completed beers will be consumed at the July meeting. Paul and Aggie Bill Hughen have volunteered to brew the pale ale. Kyle Hotz will brew a 15-gallon batch and cask-condition half. If you are interested in brewing at this event, contact Paul. We need to finalize plans at the April meeting. Speaking of the April meeting, host Mark Woerner will provide bratwurst, buns, sauerkraut, mustard and onions. His suggested sides for guests to bring are beans, salad and potato salad (especially German).
There was no competition this month. While we enjoyed a variety of food, we were treated to new homebrews from Robin Baker/Christyn Overstake (dry, still wit-flavored mead), John Cicola (amber ale), Chris Edwards (dry-hopped IPA and porter), Paul (amber ale) and Josh Stacey (red ale). Interesting commercial beers included Danna Sharpe’s Saint Arnold Bishops Barrel No 6 Imperial Pumpkin Stout, Chris Swanson’s Rogue Russian Imperial Stout and Rogue Yellow Snow IPA and Mark Woerner’s Dogfish Head Chateau Jiahu. As we watched whirling dervishes perform with hula hoops, Lindy turned off the fluorescent lights and turned on the cluster of hanging ceramic lamps created by member Kevin Ramler. What a show!

February 2014 Minutes!
President Adam Klager called the meeting to order and welcomed new members Frank and Ed Aleman (Rockport) and Josh Stacey (USMC). Treasurer Carroll Pate reported that the club balance was down a little bit due to expenditures and uncollected dues from several members. An anonymous voice from the audience (let’s call him “Paul” for a change) shouted “Travis is in arrears”. An unsuccessful search was launched for the offending Mr. Clapp. “Paul” said “Last time I saw him, he was behind a girls’ locker room testing that pair of x-ray specs he bought from an ad in the back of a comic book”. Clean it up, Travis! Guest Kyle Bauer volunteered to host the March meeting at his yoga studio downtown.
The competition this month was for robust porter, BJCP category 12B. Defending Homebrewer of the Year Mark Woerner collected 2 points for 1st, while Vice President and Competition Director Cory Mathews scored one point for 2nd place. Mark’s other porter took 3rd.
We washed down our dinner with RSS’s delicious cocoa stout and several new homebrews – besides the competition beers we enjoyed an IPA by Drew Burkhardt/Cory, an amber ale by Bob Davis/Carroll/Chris Swanson, a hoppy Imperial red by Andrew Herzig/Sabrina Krueger, a “Brambling Viking” ale by Brad Klager, an altbier by Kevin Ramler and a porter by Roberto Vela. The club provided Anchor Porter and Deschutes Black Butte Porter as commercial examples for the competition. Other commercial beverages included Brad’s Jester King Commercial Suicide, Cannibal Chris Schofield’s The Bruery 4 Calling Birds and Danna Sharpe’s Darcy’s Vineyard Grape Blackberry Jalapeño Pepper Wine.
